What is travel insurance and why should I consider it?
Travel insurance is designed to protect you from financial losses due to unexpected incidents you encounter while traveling. These incidents can be in the form of medical emergencies, flight delays, lost luggage, trip cancellations and more. World Nomads has four different plans for US residents, each with differing benefits and policy limits designed to suit all kinds of travelers. What should I look for in a travel insurance plan?
You’ll want to consider several factors when deciding which travel insurance plan to pick. These include:
- Trip Cost – will the plan limits cover your total trip cost if something unexpected comes up and you need to cancel?
- Activities – does your plan cover you for all the activities you may do while on your trip? Each plan covers more than 250 activities, and our Explorer and Epic plans cover even more activities and sports.
- Pre-existing Medical Conditions – do you have an existing, but stable, medical condition that could flair up during the trip? Most plans do not cover pre-existing conditions, however our Explorer and Epic plans have a ‘pre-existing exclusion waiver’ available if you purchase your travel insurance plan during a time-sensitive period and are healthy enough to travel when you first made the purchase.
- Baggage and Gear – What is the value of the stuff you are bringing? Learn about the per-item and total limits available in our travel insurance plans. We suggest you take photos and keep receipts of the items you are bringing with you, in case you need to make a baggage claim. You’ll need proof of ownership.
- Exclusions, Terms and Conditions – While our travel insurance plans cover quite a bit, they do not cover everything. It’s important to read the plan documents to understand what is and isn’t covered. You can get the plan documents when you get a quote. Give us a call if you have any questions.

Can I purchase travel insurance after leaving on my trip?

How does World Nomads price travel insurance?
The cost of travel insurance depends on a range of factors including:
- The length of your trip
- Your chosen destination(s)
- The level of coverage/plan you pick (Standard, Explorer, Epic or Annual Plans)
You can pick a single, couple or family plan. Up to seven dependents under the age of 25 may be added to your single-trip plan for free (excluding The Annual plan). All parties on a plan need to reside in the same state and be US residents.

How do I make a travel insurance claim?
Making a claim is a straightforward process.
1. Log on to the World Nomads membership portal. If you have purchased travel insurance with us before, make sure you pick the correct plan.
2. You will be prompted to click onto the portal of our claim's administrator, Trip Mate.
3. Report the incident. Let us know what happened as soon as possible, but up to a maximum of 20 days from when the incident occurred.
4. Submit documents. Documents required will depend on what you are claiming for, but they could include police reports, medical records, receipts, and more. It’s important to remember that travel insurance is considered ‘secondary (or excess) insurance’. This means that you must have tried to receive benefits from your primary health care or an airline (for example) first, before claiming with us. You’ll need to show proof of what the other party denied to pay.

Are there any exclusions or limitations to travel insurance coverage?
Our travel insurance plans cover quite a bit, but they do not cover everything. Here is a list of things that are never covered:
1. Expenses incurred within 100 miles of your home.
2. Expenses occurred at a destination or date not listed in your travel insurance plan. You can get a ‘global’ plan if you do not a have set destination in mind. If you need to extend your trip, you can buy another travel insurance plan while you are on the road.
3. Any incidents occurring in a country that we are not allowed to help you in. These are countries sanctioned by the US government.
4. Any illegal or reckless acts. You must follow all local laws in order to be eligible for benefits. If you plan to drive a car or motorbike in the country you are traveling to, be sure to check the licensing requirements. Reckless acts may include losses occurring while you are intoxicated.

Can I cancel my travel insurance plan and receive a refund?
There is a “free look” period built into every plan. The amount of time is dependent upon which state you live in. This “free look” period is the time you have to read your plan documents and decide if this travel insurance plan is right for you. If you decide you want to cancel during the “free look” period, you can then do so providing:
1. You haven’t started your trip;
2. You haven’t made a claim or used any non-insurance service;
3. You don’t want to make a claim or exercise any other right under the plan.
To cancel, you need to sign into your membership, choose your plan and follow the links to cancel.

Will travel insurance cover me if I don’t have the right travel documents and I’m denied entry?
While your travel insurance benefits can cover many things, you may not be covered if you don’t have the right travel documents. If you get to the airport and aren’t allowed past the security checkpoint because you don’t have a REAL ID, you may have to cancel your trip. That may not be covered by trip cancellation coverage though, because that could have been prevented. You also may not be covered if you aren’t allowed entry into a country because you didn’t apply for a visa. Trip cancellation benefits only cover certain unexpected and unplanned situations as explained in your plan documents. It’s your responsibility to gather all of the travel documents you need for your trip and avoid situations that would prevent you from traveling.

Because of life’s unexpected curveballs, you may want to consider a travel protection plan that has an optional cancel for any reason travel insurance benefit. If you purchase the Explorer or Epic Plan with the additional cancel for any reason add-on, you could cancel your trip for any reason that’s not otherwise covered by your plan. The other thing to remember is that even though you may have the travel insurance benefit that allows you to be able to cancel for any reason, you must cancel at least 2 days prior to your trip departure if you plan to make a claim. For the Explorer plan, you could be reimbursed 50% of the prepaid, forfeited, non-refundable payments or deposits you paid not to exceed $5,000. With the Epic Plan, you could be reimbursed for up to 75% of those costs, not to exceed $11,250. If you don’t cancel on time though and then realize at the airport that you don’t have the documents you need, this benefit won’t help you. When you get a quote for travel insurance benefits and non-insurance services, you’ll be able to see specific information about the plan. This insurance benefit costs additional money and is not available to residents of NY. Additional terms may apply.

Will travel insurance benefits help me if my passport or visa documents are lost or stolen?
The travel protection plans from World Nomads could include travel insurance benefits that cover lost or stolen travel documents, provided you did everything you could to protect your property. First of all, make sure you report your passport lost or stolen. In the event of a covered claim you could be reimbursed for the cost of a replacement document up to $100 under the Baggage and Personal Effects benefit. If your trip has been delayed at least six consecutive hours because your travel documents were stolen, you may also be reimbursed for reasonable additional expenses such as meals, accommodations, local transportation, and more, that are incurred due to the delay. Just make sure you keep all documentation like police reports and a copy of the request for your replacement passport.
