If something happens while you’re enjoying your overseas adventure and you need to come back to Australia, World Nomads travel insurance can help you pick up where you left off.

What is trip resumption cover?

If you've had to interrupt your trip and return home because you:

  • Were sick or injured overseas, or
  • One of your close relatives has been hospitalised or has died, or
  • A severe weather event has struck your home in Australia resulting in severe damage.

World Nomads overseas travel insurance policies offer coverage for reasonable transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, so that you can get back on the road and finish your trip.

What am I covered for if my trip has been cut short?

We may pay for reasonable additional transport and accommodation expenses, up to policy limits, for you to resume your trip if you’ve had to return home during your travels for a compassionate emergency visit, your repatriation back home for medical treatment, or because your home in Australia is severely damaged by a natural disaster.

Your policy still needs to be valid for the period of your resumed trip. Your policy also needs to be the one that you were travelling on when you had to return home.

Trip resumption: what's not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Some things we don’t cover for trip resumption include:

  • Any expenses incurred while you're at home.
  • If you go home because you're homesick.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Any trip resumption expenses unless pre-approved by us or our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.
  • If you don’t wish to resume your trip, your cover will cease at the time you arrive home. There is no refund for any unused portion of your policy.
  • Anything else listed in the exclusions on your policy.

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. Be sure to read your PDS and contact us if you have any questions.

Need to know more?

If you have questions or need help, you can contact us.

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of cover in the PDS for the full details on what’s not covered as well as the terms, conditions, limitation and exclusions. If you are unsure of anything, please contact us for help.

Be prepared if you need to claim for trip resumption.

Depending on your claim, you'll need copies of:

  • Receipts
  • Itineraries
  • Doctors' reports/death certificates
  • Medical history (ruling out pre-existing conditions)
  • New flight tickets

Traveller’s tip: you should read your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully to understand what you will be covered for when it comes to trip resumption. Contact us if you have any questions.

Traveller’s tip: With World Nomads you can get a quote, make a claim, or extend your policy instantly online, even while travelling.

Grandma in palliative care

My grandmother suffered an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage after having a fall and was subsequently placed in palliative care in November. I received a phone call to return home as my grandmother only had a few days to live according to the doctors. I returned home, and she passed away. I then recommenced my travels after her passing and funeral.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about trip resumption and insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Help Center or you can ask our customer service team

  • What is the difference between trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip resumption cover?

These benefits may help with reasonable costs associated if your trip is affected by a list of specific events.

    • Trip cancellation may cover reasonable costs to cancel all or part of your trip. You can still be overseas and travelling to claim on this benefit.
    • Trip interruption may cover reasonable costs to re-arrange your trip after it's interrupted. You can still be overseas and travelling to claim on this benefit.
    • Trip resumption cover may help you resume your trip after repatriation to Australia for medical treatment, a compassionate visit for a close relative who has died or is seriously ill, or if your home is severely damaged by a natural disaster.
  • Am I covered if my trip is interrupted by a pandemic?

Some exclusions may apply for epidemics, pandemics or World Health Organization (WHO) declarations of a public health emergency of international concern. When they apply, these exclusions are outlined in your PDS.

For further information on coverage for COVID-19 read our What’s Covered for Coronavirus article, which has all of the details, including benefit limits, conditions and exclusions.

  • What if I’m resuming my trip from a country other than Australia?
If you’re resuming your trip because of a compassionate emergency visit that takes you to a country other than Australia, you can resume your trip from this country. But we’ll only pay the lesser of what it would cost to resume your trip from this country or from your country of residence.
