So you’ve finally set off on your big adventure after months of planning and packing. You finally arrive at your destination, but your bags do not. What if an airline loses your baggage with all your carefully chosen clothes and equipment inside?
Your bags may be lost or delayed by the airline, or they may get damaged. Our travel insurance may be able to help when your bags’ plans are not the same as your plans!
You may have spent days planning what to pack. Maybe you even purchased special clothes or equipment ahead of time. If your baggage goes missing, this can be a huge problem for you.
So if something unexpected happens to your gear, you want to be fully prepared. That's why coverage for missing or delayed bags is so important.
Depending upon the insurance policy you have chosen, we may be able to provide assistance in the following situations:
Before traveling, it is always a good idea to carefully read through your insurance policy to make sure you fully understand what is covered. That way you will be prepared to take the proper actions and there won’t be any surprises if you need to make a claim while away from home.
World Nomads aims to make sure that you have peace of mind over your belongings, leaving you free to have the best time while exploring the world. However, travel insurance cannot cover everything. Some of the situations or circumstances that are not covered may include:
It may seem obvious, but it is very important to always be aware of your baggage and make sure it is always safe. Our community of Nomads has gotten together to prepare this guide with 9 essential tips for keeping your luggage safe. The tips range from a “less is more” approach to planning - ensuring there is less to have to keep an eye on! - to keeping a handy supply of zip ties. When it comes to security, we’ve got you covered!
We’ve all experienced that panicky feeling when you realize that some or all of your possessions are not where they should be. It may be something as simple as the airline losing your bags or sending them to the wrong destination, or something more outlandish, such as your passport being stolen on the Trans-Siberian Express.
Keeping a level head and knowing exactly what needs to be done in such situations can mean the difference between your trip turning into a complete disaster and ensuring that the problem is resolved, and you can keep going.
If your baggage is delayed for more than 12 hours, you may be able to claim reimbursement on expenses involved in the purchase of essential items such as clothing and personal hygiene products.
Once again, it is essential that you straighten out all the documentation with the airline company and get a copy of the ‘PIR’ or ‘Property Irregularity Report’. Once you have this in your hands, our 24-hour Emergency Assistance team can provide you with assistance and guidance on what to do next.
Although our team is not responsible for finding your lost bags or stolen documents, they can liaise with the airline company in the tracking process. They may be able to provide information on how to report lost or stolen documents to the local police and provide contact numbers for consulates and embassies. In addition, they may be able to advise on the best ways of receiving emergency funds from family or friends back home.

I arrived in Delhi from Rome. Baggage claim help desk informed me that my bag had been delayed in transit. I was without my bag for almost a week before it was finally delivered to me. It was cold in Delhi (being winter, December) and my warm jacket was in my bag, requiring that I purchase a jacket and other items of warm clothing that I had not taken in my carry-on.
