Do I need extra country cover if I am only making a stop-over, but not leaving the airport?

If you’re planning a few stopovers in certain countries while travelling overseas, you might be thinking to yourself – Do I need travel insurance for all these countries even though I’ll only be visiting the airport lounge?

World Nomads offers travel insurance cover if you do decide to leave the airport and go exploring a new city or country. On the other hand, if you don’t leave the airport you won’t need to buy any extra cover, however, this will depend on your country of residence and the plan you’ve chosen.

If you do decide to extend your trip there are terms and conditions attached to buying or extending your policy while overseas. World Nomads travel insurance coverage is activated depending on:

  • Where you are when you buy or extend the policy.
  • The date of purchase.
  • The date you choose the cover to start (start date).
  • The date your trip actually starts, and
  • The date you choose your cover to end (end date).

Important: When you buy a policy, you must select all the countries and regions where you’ll be travelling, and these will be shown on your Certificate of Insurance/policy certificate. Your policy will provide cover for your chosen countries and regions of travel unless there’s a warning issued by your government's Foreign Ministry advising against all or all but essential travel to a particular country or part of a country and you choose to go there anyway. Refer to your government's Foreign Ministry before you go and w hile traveling for the latest alerts and travel advice.

What if I want to extend my stay in a specific country and need extra travel insurance?

For European residents who decide they want to keep travelling, you can extend your policy before 11:59pm CET/CEST on the end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance/policy certificate, based on the time and date in the capital city of your country of residence. You may extend online using your World Nomads membership, provided:

  • You have not made, nor do you intend to make a claim; and
  • You're 69 years old or younger; and
  • Your home address remains in your country of residence noted on your Certificate of Insurance/policy certificate and you still meet the Residential Eligibility criteria of your policy

You will have continuous cover, subject to the conditions described in your policy section ‘Trip changes and extensions.

The maximum cover duration available for any policy, including extensions, is 12 months (365 days) from the original policy start date. Please be aware that you cannot extend your policy once it has lapsed, but you can buy a new policy (waiting periods, terms and conditions apply).

If you need to make changes to your policy visit our Managing your policy section and choose your country or region of residence to get the latest updates.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it.
