Am I covered if I have a pre-existing medical condition?

For information relating to policies purchased prior to 27 June 2024, please check the Policy Wording provided with your purchase. You can contact us if you need this sent to you again. For policies purchased from 27 June 2024, please see below.

We understand that when travelling, you or any of your travelling companions might suffer from a pre-existing medical condition but unfortunately pre-existing medical conditions cannot be covered under our policy.

We do not offer a policy under the following circumstances:

  • If you have been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
  • If you are travelling intending to receive medical treatment.
  • If you are travelling against the advice of a medical practitioner or would be travelling against their advice if you asked for it.

While this is not ideal, we still want to help you out with World Nomads Travel Insurance for many other issues that may arise.

We offer you the option to buy our Standard Plan or Explorer Plan online before you take off on your holiday, but please be aware that there's no cover for any costs arising from any pre-existing medical condition (as defined in the policy wording). Please read the policy terms and conditions for more information.

What is a ‘pre-existing medical condition’?

The following definition can help
determine if you, your travel companion, an immediate
relative or someone upon whom your trip depends has a pre-existing medical condition. If any of the following exist at the time you buy or extend your policy, start your trip or book a new trip, then we’ll consider that you have a pre-existing medical condition:

  • Any medical or dental condition, or related complication that has required or is awaiting medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, prescribed medication, consultations, check-ups, surgery, tests or investigations in the 180 days before you buy or extend your policy or book your trip (whichever you do last).

A change in health after purchasing your policy?

If you experience a change in health at any time after you’ve bought a policy, such as a new or increased medication, any referral for tests or a specialist appointment, received or awaiting results of tests/investigations or a new diagnosis/course of treatment, you will need to be able to provide medical confirmation from your General Practitioner that you were fit to travel in the event of a claim.

If you are no longer fit to travel, you are welcome to submit a claim for consideration by our claims team. Alternatively, you can request the policy be cancelled. If the request is made outside of the policy cooling- off period, a refund would be at our discretion.

What’s not covered?

  • Any medical condition you suffer from or are treated for while travelling may be considered a pre-existing medical condition during any extension period, if you extend your policy beyond the original Return Date.
  • Any pre-existing conditions of the teeth and dental treatment which are not pain relieving and can await your arrival home.
  • Regarding medical and dental expenses, we don’t cover expenses arising from a pre-existing medical condition.

Any medical claim that we settle for you will have the policy excess deducted, per insured person, per event.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions in the policy wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you are unsure of whether or not you have the right cover, please contact us for help.
