Am I covered by travel insurance if I'm scuba diving?

We can offer you a policy for your next scuba diving adventure.

If you plan to go scuba diving at least once during your trip then select the type of scuba diving you'll be doing and the depth e.g 'Scuba diving to 50 meters'.

What's covered

Scuba Diving Certification Conditions of Cover
Not Certified    Cover to scuba dive under licensed instruction to a maximum depth of 50 meters
Certified Diver    You can dive to the depth that your license allows up to a maximum depth of 50 meters
Shark Cage diving    Covered to a depth of 50 meters
Cave diving and Cavern diving    Covered to a depth of 50 metres
Free diving    Covered to a depth of 50 meters
    Commercial Diving    Not Covered

Our policies may also provide cover for the theft or damage of sporting equipment (except while it’s being used or left unattended) or damage to sporting equipment by a common carrier. So if you’re fins, mask or scuba equipment gets damaged or stolen while in transit with a common carrier, you can make a claim.

Conditions apply, so it’s worth taking the time to read more about this in your policy wording before heading overseas.

How it works

While shark cage diving in Hawaii or scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef may be number one on your “To-Do list’, we know that things can go wrong from time to time. That’s why we’ll assist you if you become seriously injured or suddenly ill while diving and need urgent medical assistance. This includes:

  • Evacuation: if it’s urgent and the treating doctor and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team decide it is medically necessary (by the most appropriate means whether by road, sea or air when necessary and available).
  • Emergency medical expenses: for treatment at the hospital or local medical centre, including decompression treatment, if agreed as medically necessary by your treating doctor and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team.
  • Repatriation: We may provide you with a ride back home, as agreed by the treating doctor and our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team, if you’re seriously injured or ill and unable to continue your trip.

If you’re in need of a medical evacuation, repatriation or if you’re admitted to hospital, you or someone with you must contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance team immediately. Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team can arrange and pre-approve all covered expenses as long as the event leading to the medical expenses is a covered event.

If you are wondering, who pays for medical treatment (and by this we mean either you pay upfront and claim later, or we pay upfront) it depends on what’s happened to you and the necessary treatment required.

Also be aware that any medical claim or sporting equipment claim we settle to you will have a policy excess deducted per person, per claimable event.

What’s not covered

Here are the main things that aren’t covered:

  • Any dive which takes you below your current qualification limits or any dive below 50 metres under any circumstances. (Don’t go diving down to have a closer look at the Titanic please!)
  • Any unaccompanied dive or any dive for gain or reward
  • If you act with disregard for your own safety, gross negligence or actively engage in any illegal act
  • Search and rescue costs under any circumstances
  • Any on-going medical expenses once you return to your home country
  • Any other reason listed under the General Exclusions in your policy wording

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything. Take the time to read the terms and conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details on what is and isn’t covered. That way there are no surprises if you need to use it.
