Cover for trip resumption after an unexpected return home

We’ll pay for your reasonable additional travel expenses (equivalent to a return Economy Class airplane ticket) for you to resume your trip to the destination where you would have been (according to your original travel plan at the time you are resuming your trip) if you are:

1. medically evacuated or repatriated home due to an acute serious illness or acute serious injury; or

2. using the compassionate emergency repatriation cover.

How it works

If you’d like to resume your trip, you MUST advise us within 30 days following your repatriation or compassionate return home.

Provided your policy is still valid (that is, it’s the same policy that covered your unexpected return home and has not expired) and we’ve agreed to cover your additional travel expenses to get you back to your adventures, you’ll be covered by the Resumption of Trip benefit.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the policy wording for the full terms and conditions, particularly Section 14 Trip Interruption and Section 15 Resumption of Trip and the General Exclusions, so there are no surprises if you do need to use it.

Here are the main things that aren’t covered:

  • Any expenses that relate to a pre-existing medical condition as explained in the policy wording.
  • Any costs once you are returned to your country of permanent residence.
  • The policy excess, deductible or co-pay amount as shown in the policy wording
  • If the incident causing your return home was not covered under this policy
  • travelling expenses incurred which are not authorised by the Emergency Assistance Service
  • resumption of the trip if it does not take place within the same insurance period as the incident;
  • Anything else that's listed in the exclusions on the policy.
Indian residents: The Resumption of Trip benefit is not included under the policy available when selecting India as your country of permanent residency. Our insurer for Indian travellers, ihi Bupa, has decided that they are no longer able to manage benefits greater than cover for Overseas Medical Expenses and Medical Evacuation/Repatriation.
