How does World Nomads Travel Insurance work?

A true claim story

  • After swimming in the ocean, my entire upper body broke out in a rash. I tried creams, talc and Benadryl for 3 days, but could not bring rash under control. I was unable to sleep and was constantly itching. I started breaking out in blisters where the rash was. I contacted Nomads via email and ended up going to the emergency room where I was prescribed a strong antihistamine and prednisone. This stopped the itching after 24 to 36 hours, but the blistering continued for another week or so.

  • I woke up at 6.30am because I felt a bug enter my ear canal. I had to go to emergency because of the pain and waited for the otolaryngologist. He examined my ear and proceeded to flush it out with a warm liquid. It turned out to be a "silverfish" bug.
    Resident of Peru
  • I was surfing at Echo beach in Canggu. I wiped out and hit the reef on the bottom with my right ankle. I had some pain at that time and was bleeding a bit, but it wasn't severe. I came home immediately after that happened. The part of the wound was a bit swollen at night and I thought it would go away soon because that's usually what happens with reef cuts. It didn't go away, even after a couple of days. At the hospital, they found out there was a small part of the coral reef inside of the skin.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is travel insurance and why do I need to consider it?

Travel insurance is designed to protect you from financial losses you could incur prior to or while traveling. Also, your personal health insurance may not cover costs while traveling out of the country or might exclude certain activities. With travel insurance, you can explore your boundaries (within reason, of course) and still have cover available. World Nomads travel insurance can help protect your next trip when you’re getting ready to explore the world.

  • What should I look for in a travel insurance plan?

Here are some important factors to consider when browsing our travel insurance plans:

    • Assess your needs: Determine what kind of coverage you need based on your destination, country of residence, activities, medical history, and personal circumstances.
    • Activities and sports: Does your plan cover you for all the activities you may do while on your trip? Think about the activities you'll be doing while you're away. Each of our World Nomads travel insurance plans cover more than 150+ activities. You may need to add extra activities to your policy if they aren't automatically included.
    • Trip cancellation: Are you wondering what happens if you need to cancel a trip unexpectedly? If you need to cancel your trip unexpectedly, we may cover the non-refundable travel expenses. A traveler must have already been issued with our Certificate of Insurance to be eligible for cancellation coverage.
    • Baggage and gear: Take photos and keep receipts of the items you are bringing with you; in case you need to make a baggage claim. Learn about the other information we require before you make a claim.
    • Exclusions, terms and conditions –While our travel insurance plans may offer coverage for many different events, they do not cover everything. It’s important to read the policy wording to understand what is and isn’t covered. You’ll get a copy of the policy wording when you get a quote. Contact us if you have any questions.
  • Can I cancel my travel insurance policy and receive a refund?

World Nomads offers trip cancellation coverage for unforeseen events but it will depend on your country of residence and the type of travel insurance plan you’ve chosen. You can cancel your policy for a full refund before the day of departure if:

    1. You haven’t started your trip.
    2. You haven’t made a claim.
    3. You don’t plan to make a claim.

Sign into your account to cancel or contact us for help. Just sign into your account, choose your policy and follow the links to cancel before your policy Departure date. Note: Refunds are not provided for unused policy portions if you return home early.

  • Will travel insurance cover pre-existing medical conditions?

World Nomads does not offer cover for medical conditions which exist before you buy or extend your policy. However, there are over 40 pre-existing medical conditions that we may offer cover for depending on your country of residence. In some cases, some pre-existing medical conditions which exist at the time you buy your policy and where you meet specific requirements may be automatically covered.

Carefully consider your medical history, as well as the health of your close relatives, others in your traveling party and anyone else, as your and their conditions (past or present) may affect your trip and travel insurance cover. Terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions apply. You can always reach out and contact us if you have any questions.

  • Am I covered for countries other than the ones I list on my policy?

To make sure you’re covered for all the countries you’re planning on traveling to you must select them all when you purchase your travel insurance with World Nomads.

    • When you get a quote, you need to select the countries you plan to visit, as you won't be able to add any countries after you have purchased a policy.
    • If you try to add a country that we don’t cover (e.g. Iraq, North Korea, Sudan), you won’t be able to continue with your quote.
    • If you choose certain regions like ‘Asia’ or ‘Worldwide,’ rather than individual countries, please note there may still be some countries excluded from coverage; for example, due to sanction exclusions in the policy wording.
    • ‘Do Not Travel’ government travel warnings can be issued or changed without notice at any time, so always check the status with your relevant government body before you buy a policy and before you pay anything towards your trip, either deposits or the full amount.
