Travel Insurance Cover for Lost or Stolen Passports

If your passport has been lost or stolen while on your travels abroad, cover is available to claim for the replacement costs to get you back on the road as soon as possible.

What’s covered

If your passport is lost or stolen from your person, for example, taken from your bag without your knowledge while you were carrying it OR lost or stolen when locked in a safety deposit box, you can claim:

  • The reasonable additional expenses you have to pay whilst abroad as a result of you needing to replace a lost or stolen passport.
  • Additional transport or accommodation costs incurred in returning home as the loss of travel documents meant you missed your pre booked departure. Refer to Missed Departure Outside the UK benefit for more information.

What you need to do if your passport has been stolen or lost

When making a claim for your lost or stolen passport, you must provide the written police report and receipts for all costs incurred.

What’s not covered

Travel insurance is not designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the full description of cover in the policy wording for the full details on what’s covered and not covered.

Here are some of the main things that aren’t covered:

  • Claims for loss or theft if you are unable to provide a police report;
  • Any costs incurred if your passport has been left unattended at any time (except when locked in a safe or safety box) or if you do not exercise reasonable care for the safety or supervision of your passport/travel documents; and
  • Specified high value items lost, stolen or damaged in transit that have been checked in unless your carrier insisted the items were checked in;
  • Anything mentioned in the Personal Belongings Exclusions.
