What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Croatia? Sunny islands like Vis and Korcula, beaches on the Dalmatian Coast, the historic walled city of Dubrovnik, and a welcoming culture all come to mind for us. Travelers also come for the lush national parks, unique cuisine, burgeoning wine scene, and under-the-radar experiences in Eastern Croatia’s historic Slavonia and Baranja. Whatever your ideal adventure looks like, Croatia offers adventure, natural beauty, and a rich history and culinary traditions.

You can bet we’ve seen all sorts of travel insurance claims from Americans in Croatia. International travel can be life changing, but it also can involve those less-than-great moments - like sickness, missed flights, and lost baggage. Because of this, you may want to get a quote for travel insurance* for Croatia before you set out on your journey.

Do I need travel insurance for Croatia?

International travel can come with many surprises—such as finding a tiny winery outside Dubrovnik that has been in the family for hundreds of years, or taking that perfect photo in Rovinj that will now be framed on your living room wall for years to come.

Some surprises are not as great, though. Nobody wants to think about things like canceled tripsdelayed baggage, and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly. Croatia is in an earthquake-prone area and even the smallest shaking could disrupt flight schedules. Or, what if you trip while walking on the cobblestone streets in Split? In these cases, you may wish that you had travel insurance for Europe.

World Nomads has four plans to select from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best international travel insurance for your needs.

Travel insurance for activities in Croatia

Whether you’re planning to explore sail between islands in the Adriatic Sea or hike to waterfalls in Krka National Park, World Nomads travel insurance covers Americans for over 250 activities in Croatia. Rock climbing the canyons of Paklenica National Park, sea kayaking from Hvar or Dubrovnik, and windsurfing around Kučište-Viganj are all covered under travel insurance for Croatia.

It’s important to have a fairly concrete idea of your trip plans before you get a quote. Different plans cover different activities. The more adventurous activities could require a higher tier plan, like the Explorer or Epic Plan. For example, all plans cover sea kayaking. However, if you want to cliff diving, you’ll need to invest in the Epic Plan.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in Croatia

Whether you break your ankle while hiking through Paklenica National Park or sustain an injury while windsurfing, you can protect yourself from loss due to emergency medical expenses by purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Croatia.

In a medical emergency, the first thing you should do (if you are medically able) is call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team. The team may be able to help you find a reputable medical center and could help organize the care you need. If you are unable to call until later, make sure you call them as soon as possible.

The Emergency Assistance Team can also help you navigate the unfamiliar health care system in Croatia, including assisting you with language barriers and finding the best places to seek medical treatment.

Travel insurance for lost luggage in Croatia

Lost or stolen bags is never something we plan for, but these things do happen. Did you arrive in Dubrovink but your bag—packed with your new swimsuit and favorite sundress for your beach vacation—didn’t?

If you’re lucky, your bags just took a detour and will eventually make their way to you. Even a delayed bag can be stressful though. If this happens, the first step is to contact the airline. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact Blue Ribbon Bags, a non-insurance service that will track and expedite the return of your undelivered baggage by the airline. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call Blue Ribbon Bags so you can file a lost luggage claim.

While Croatia is generally considered safe, pickpocketing or theft can happen anywhere. If your stuff is stolen from under your nose, your travel insurance plan could also reimburse you for what was lost (deprecation, exclusions and plan limits will apply). When picking a plan, you may want to consider the amount of baggage coverage available and make sure you are comfortable with the maximum amount. Each plan has different limits.

Travel insurance for cancelled, interrupted, or delayed trips to Croatia

Sometimes your plans just don’t work out. World Nomads travel insurance plans include trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay benefits that may provide reimbursement for your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable expenses.

Trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage can help protect you in case of emergencies back home in the US. If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered reason such as a medical emergency or the death of an immediate family member, you may be eligible for reimbursement of your unused travel expenses (like hotels or plane tickets) that you can no longer use. Each plan has a different limit for this, though. You’ll want to be sure you pick a plan that could cover your entire trip expense, should this unexpected and disappointing event happen to you.

If you purchase the Explorer and Epic Plan during the time sensitive period, the plans also may cover various travel inconveniences you may encounter on your Croatian getaway. For example, if you sat on the tarmac for two hours or more on the way to Croatia, you may be eligible for a $250 payment for that inconvenience. Or if your rental car broke down on a road trip through Istria and you arrived more than 12 hours late at your destination, you may also be eligible for coverage.
