From castles to the mountains, US residents can protect their trip to the Czech Republic with travel insurance coverage

Exquisite castles and cathedrals…UNESCO World Heritage Sites… some of the most premium beer in the world… The Czech Republic “czechs” all the boxes for a great getaway for visiting Americans. Add in some savory Czech cuisine, a trek to the mountains, and a visit to Prague and you’ll see why the Czech Republic has become such a desired vacation destination.
There are so many great things to see and do in the Czech Republic, but there are also some things to be aware of. We encourage you to check out our tips on what travelers need to know when traveling to the Czech Republic. You may also want to consider getting a quote for travel insurance benefits* that can help protect you against the unexpected bumps in the road.
Even with plenty of advance planning, there’s a possibility that unexpected situations can happen when you’re traveling outside of the United States.
What happens if you or your travel buddy get sick before your trip, and you can’t travel? Or what happens if you get hurt while hiking in Krokonose National Park? At that time, you may think travel insurance for the Czech Republic is a good idea. Unfortunately, it’ll be too late to get travel insurance after something happens. Travel insurance should be purchased as soon as you incur prepaid, nonrefundable expenses towards your trip.
There are four plans to choose from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options to determine the best travel protection plan for your needs.
World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Americans traveling to the Czech Republic, including hiking and rock climbing in the Bohemian Paradise. If you want to kayak on the Elbe River or spend a day cross country skiing in the Jizera Mountains, those adventures could be covered too.
Think about the types of activities you’ll be doing while you’re there. Not everything is included in every plan so it’s helpful to have an idea of what adventures you’ll be going on to get the most accurate quote. An advance plan will help you choose the best insurance coverage for your trip—and make sure even your most daring adventure is covered.
Nobody plans to get sick or injured on vacation, but it happens. If you get injured while cycling through Sumava National Park, you may need to see a doctor.
Not all health insurance plans have out-of-area coverage. Because of this, you may want to consider travel insurance coverage that includes overseas emergency medical costs. If you have a medical emergency and can’t find a doctor that speaks English, you can also call our 24/7 emergency assistance team and they can help translate.
If you’re so sick or injured that our emergency assistance team and your treating physician thinks it’s best for you to travel back to the US for treatment, travel insurance that covers repatriation may also help cover the costs to get you there.
To streamline your experience seeking medical treatment in the Czech Republic, we recommend signing up for FootprintID before your trip. This non-insurance service perk is a portable personal health record where your documents, prescriptions, test results, and emergency contacts are accessible in one place anywhere in the world. Whether you need to refill a prescription or deal with a more serious injury, FootprintID expedites the process.
Even when you spend lots of time and resources planning the perfect trip, unexpected situations can happen. A good travel protection plan for the Czech Republic could reimburse you for unused, prepaid, non-refundable travel expenses if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason. For example, if your trip to the Czech Republic gets cancelled because an airline strike stops you from getting there, you could be reimbursed for non-refundable, unsed tours and hotel accommodations that you paid for in advance.
Travel insurance could also help if you’re already on your trip and it gets interrupted. For example, you may need to go back to the United States early if an immediate family member back home has an expected medical emergency or dies.
The Explorer and Epic Plans also may cover for various travel inconveniences you may encounter. Say you’re on a several-day river cruise down the Danube and river levels result in missed stops. If you bought your plan during the time sensitive period, your World Nomads protection plan for the Czech Republic may reimburse you for this inconvenience. Just make sure you keep all receipts and documentation in case you need to make a claim.
A common insurance claim that we get is lost luggage. If you’re left waiting at the airport carousel in Brno and your bag is delayed for 12 hours or more, the baggage coverage that is included in your travel insurance plan for the Czech Republic could help you be reimbursed for a change of clothes and toiletries until your bag makes its way to you.
If you’re lucky, your bag just took a detour but even a delayed bag can be stressful. If you and your bag are never reunited, you could be covered for the cost of replacing the bag and your belongings in it, minus depreciation and up to your policy limits.
The first step is to contact the airline. If the airline isn’t able to help you locate your lost bag, the second step is to contact Blue Ribbon Bags, a non-insurance service that will track and expedite the return of your undelivered baggage by the airline. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call Blue Ribbon Bags so you can file a lost luggage claim.
Prague is known for its luxury shopping, and we know it can be tempting to carry your souvenirs back home to the US in your new Dolce & Gabbana backpack. While baggage coverage is included, just know there are policy limits. You may want to take your high dollar bag with you as a carry on instead of checking it. If you have any questions, contact us and we can help explain what is covered.
Violent crime isn’t a big problem in the Czech Republic but pickpocketing and purse snatching unfortunately can happen. You'll want to be extra careful when you're in crowded areas and transportation hubs. Pay attention to your surroundings, avoid putting anything valuable in your back pockets, and never take your hands off your bags.
Even when you’re being cautious, things can happen. If you’re robbed, make sure you file a police report and save a copy - you’ll need that if you have to make a claim.
Just make sure you’re also doing your part to try to avoid lost and stolen items. If you sample too many delicious Czech beers and leave your phone in a bar, we won’t be able to cover that.
Before you leave the United States we encourage you to check out the US government’s safety warnings for the Czech Republic to review their up to date warnings on any advisories that may exist at that time.
If you purchase travel insurance for the Czech Republic, it’s also a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your policy number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.
Americans need an international driver’s license to drive in the Czech Republic to accompany your US driver’s license, so make sure to apply for an IDP before your trip.
