Friday, September 8, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the High Atlas mountains, southwest of Marrakesh, causing widespread destruction and the loss of many lives.
Government agencies and news outlets reported widespread disruption to transportation routes due to the extent of damage in the area. Further impacts to travel are expected.
If you are in the affected areas, follow the advice of local authorities, including evacuation orders, at all times. Travellers in these areas may experience disruption to their travel plans.
If you’re already travelling in Morocco
While our policies for Canadian residents do not provide trip interruption coverage if your destination accommodation has been made uninhabitable due to natural disaster, if you are in the area and require emergency assistance, please contact our Emergency Assistance team as soon as it is safe to do so.
If you’re planning to travel in these regions
You may have coverage for trip cancellation if your destination accommodation has become uninhabitable because of natural disaster, as long as you purchased your policy before the event happened. Coverage is not available for this event for any policies purchased on or after Saturday, September 9, 2023.
