World Nomads Create Scholarships Photography 2016 Applications Family Business The Relevance Of Ancestry Family Business: The Relevance of Ancestry. by Richard Parsons Indonesia Shares Facebook Twitter The buffalo markets in South Sulawesi are an integral part of life for the Torajan's. Agriculture is the main source of income and animals are also traded to pay off debts which often accumulate in the family. Family is the primary social grouping in Torajan society. Each generation contributes to family livelihood - here, a young man assists in trading buffalo. As well as their agricultural use, buffalo are ultimately sacrificed at funeral celebrations. After sacrifice, the buffalo meat is divided and offered to the spirits, as well as being distributed to the guests. Guests are served in order of their social importance, the noblemen first, common classes last. Three generations of women attend the funeral service of their family member. Men and women parade separately through the funeral ceremony numerous times over the course of the day. It is an occasion that unites the family and celebrates their whole ancestry. A Torajan Elder watches on from a higher vantage point, serving as a reminder of class affiliation. The nobility's condescending attitude toward the lower classes is still maintained due to ancestral family prestige.
