For external work, the tip is where technicians are most vulnerable. Hollow, and made of little more than balsa wood & fibre-glass, the turbine blades can flex significantly. On a windy day, it’s not uncommon to experience symptoms of motion sickness. Technicians use suction cups to aid positioning but their limited holding power inspires little confidence; tethering to a teammate does significantly more to calm the nerves. Working in small teams in remote locations requires a great deal of trust between colleagues. Working far from home for weeks at a time is not for everyone. For those who return each year, the compromise is worth it. But even for the most committed, a few moments reflecting on the sacrifices of such a lifestyle is only natural.
