Namibian Emptiness

What surprised me most about Namibia was how big and empty a lot of it felt. Driving this long, straight road towards Spitzkoppe, you could drive for hours without seeing much life at all (plants, animals or even other cars).

Deadvlei at sunrise is probably more impressive than photos can really show. As the sun rises above the surrounding walls of sand, these dead Camel Thorn Trees in the clay pan seem to glow against shadowed dunes.

A lone tree growing on the edge of the Etosha Pan in Etosha National Park. While the flat, empty landscape of the park is good for helping sight animals from afar - with so little shelter from the sun we saw far fewer animals than expected.

The sand dunes around Deadvlei are some of the largest in the world. This mountain of sand dwarfs the thorn tree below, but at sunset all the colours and textures really come out.

Because Namibia has very few large built up areas (and the distance between big towns is so great), there is very little light pollution creating some of the clearest night skies I've ever seen.
