The Buriganga river is an important connection between the city of Dhaka and the surrounding villages. Many people travel by boat or ferry to the city to work, earn money and then bring it back to their familiy in the village.

The contrast in the scenery catched my interest. The merchent is selling fresh cucumbers while the river is heavily polluted. Quite contrary.

This boatman was transporting the cucumbers to another market. He works six days a week. Only on fridays he is travelling back to his family to bring them money and food.

The ferries are heavily used and are very importrant for public transportation. Dozens of people are therefore working in small shanty houses to restore and reuse parts of wrecks.

The atmosphere was back-breaking. I was inhaling fine dust while photographing the workman. He has to breathe the air twelve hours a day to restore a insecure ship's screw without protective clothing. Risking his health and his life.
