Travel Alert: Iceland -11 November 2023

Many news outlets have reported that due to increased seismic activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula, a volcanic eruption is expected in Iceland imminently. On November 11, 2023, Iceland declared a state of emergency for the high-risk zone around the town of Grindavik, with Grindavik being evacuated as a precaution.

As of November 15, flights were still operating in and out of Iceland as normal. However, this is a rapidly evolving situation. Travelers should monitor media coverage and sign up for alerts from their airline and other travel providers.

If you are in the affected areas, follow the advice of local authorities at all times, including any evacuation orders. Travellers in these areas may experience disruption to their travel plans.

If you’re already travelling

If you’re a World Nomads traveller and require emergency assistance due to this event, please contact our Emergency Assistance team as soon as it’s practicable and safe to do so.

If you’re planning to travel in Iceland or Europe

Your policy can continue to offer cover in line with the policy terms and conditions. Note that the policy offers cover based on specific, listed insured events; also, you must be aware that policy exclusions still exist. Before planning travel, please check the government advice applicable to your policy and monitor media coverage.

If your travel plans are affected

If you need to change your travel arrangements, contact your airline, cruise company or travel agent for assistance in the first instance.

In the event you need to claim, you must do everything you can to minimise and reduce the cost of the claim and provide all supporting documentation of the event and expenses incurred. Some benefits will not apply if the natural catastrophe event has occurred prior to purchase of your policy. If you intend to submit a claim you can do so online through your membership account and policy record.

If you require assistance or have any other queries, please get in touch.
