Do I need extra country cover if I am only making a stop-over, but not leaving the airport?

Travelling from New Zealand to see the world can often mean transiting through airports in other countries. And if you’re transiting through a destination, it can be tempting to spend a few days exploring it to break up your travel. So, what are you covered for (and not covered for) if you remain in the airport, or if you leave the airport on longer stopovers?

I am stopping over and/or transiting for less than 72 hours

Our policies may cover you during a stopover or transit for up to 72 hours. When purchasing your policy, you do not have to declare the stopover country or region if you will be staying for less than 72 hours – even if you decide to leave the airport during that time.

I am stopping over for more than 72 hours

For stopovers that are longer than 72 hours you will need to declare the country or region where you intend to stopover when you purchase your policy. If you do not declare the region or country when purchasing your policy, you may not be covered in that destination should something go wrong.

What is covered during stopovers?

If you meet the qualifying conditions for cover during your stopover or transit, you will be covered under the full terms of your policy type as shown on the Certificate of Insurance (COI).

Some of the benefits on our policies include:

  • Overseas medical expenses: if you become sick or injured during your trip.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation: if you need emergency transport home due to a serious illness or injury.
  • Travel delays/interruption: if your trip is interrupted due to an insured event.
  • Baggage and valuables: if your belongings are stolen, accidentally damaged, delayed or lost.
  • Activities and adventures: coverage across more than 150 activities, sports and experiences so you can have fun adventuring your way around the world.

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer. Each policy provides different levels of coverage depending on what you need:

  • The Standard Plan covers a range of benefits and certain adventure activities and has lower coverage limits.
  • The Explorer plan covers all the benefits of the Standard plan, with larger coverage limits, more benefits and covers more sports and activities.

Cover for stopover and/or transit is subject to terms and conditions

  • We can only offer cover on stopovers or transit if you have an active policy with us – that is, we can only cover you for a loss that occurs between the travel start date and travel end date as shown on the COI.
  • If the stopover country or region is subject to a ‘Do Not Travel’ warning issued by the New Zealand Government, or it is a sanctioned country, you will not be covered in that country or region. (see – www.safetravel.govt.nz)
  • If you need to add countries or regions to your policy after purchase, you will need to take out an additional policy.

Be sure to read the Policy Document and General Exclusions for other scenarios and expenses we don’t cover so there’ll be no surprises if you need to use your cover.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your Policy Document in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it.
