The world of travel has changed, there is no doubt about that. Travelers are still interested in discovering new places. The appeal of busy hotels and big crowds has made way for vacations that involve immersion and intimacy.

Never before have we yearned for space and privacy on our own terms as we do now, which is why vacation rentals are coming into their own. But it’s unknown territory for many, that’s why you should consider World Nomads Travel Insurance, it can help you when the unexpected happens and let you focus on the good stuff.

What's covered?

World Nomads offers two plans – Standard and Explorer – each providing different levels of coverage depending on your Country of Residence and what level of cover you need. You can purchase your policy as soon as you know where you’re going and what the plans are, or if it’s all too hectic before you leave home, you can do it in transit. Our policies, include coverage for:

  • Extended stays
  • Emergency overseas medical
  • Cancellation and interruption coverage
  • Baggage and personal belongings
  • Cover for more than 150 activities, sports and experiences
  • Cover for some Coronavirus-related events (Explorer only)
  • Rental vehicle insurance (Explorer only)
  • Single, duo, or family plans

Why should I consider travel insurance?

While we don’t like to think about it, things can and do go wrong when we’re far from home, even for the most seasoned of travelers.

As with most vacation rentals, the primary renter will be expected to put down a deposit to secure the lease, travel insurance can help you keep that payment secure, and possibly recoup a refund should you be forced to cancel at the last-minute as a result of illness, or due to a natural disaster in the area.

Same goes if you are booked into a beachside rental that costs you a fortune and a day or two into a week-long stay you get a call from home to say your mother has taken ill and you need to return to your country of residence immediately.

Travel insurance tip: vacation rentals have various house rules about occupancy, minimum age requirements for the primary renter and so on. Do ensure you understand what you're agreeing to before booking to avoid potentially incurring any extra fees or losing your deposit.

Travel insurance highlights:

Of the two plans we offer, while there are plenty of similarities, the Explorer option provides additional cover for things like Rental Vehicle Excess, Covid-related events, personal accident and missed connection.

It’s up to you to choose the policy that best suits your needs, but it is worth noting once you have booked a Standard policy you can’t upgrade it.

  • Cancellation of your trip - if there’s a family emergency during your trip, or before you set off you find out that as a health worker you are required to assist with a further outbreak of Covid-19 and have to cancel the trip, your policy may allow you to recoup any pre-paid, non-refundable costs. Your plan may be able to recover the unused, non-refundable expenses of cancelling your trip.
  • Coverage for extended stays - so long as your policy hasn’t lapsed, you may opt to extend your cover at the cute little mountainside chalet you are enjoying so much. Your plan can be extended while still travelling for up to 12 months from your departure date (terms and conditions apply). We are happy to extend your policy as long as it’s done before the end date shown on your Certificate of Insurance.
  • Natural disasters - if the unexpected occurs and there is an earthquake or volcanic eruption in the area you are booked to stay in, and evacuation is necessary you may be able to claim for the loss of funds. Terms and conditions apply.
  • Emergency medical and evacuation - seeking medical help can be an expensive exercise in countries that aren’t your own. If you need to see a doctor or are forced to go to hospital, we may be able to assist with some of the costs. You must call the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Team, before incurring any medical costs.
  • Baggage and personal belongings - if someone breaks into your holiday house and steals your laptop or Go-Pro camera, insurance may assist you in recouping the cost of the equipment at the time of the theft. A copy of the police report is required when lodging your claim. You’ll need to submit receipts, police reports and witness details (if your belongings were stolen). Claims without any substantiating documents may not be approved. Baggage delays may also be covered, so long as delays are more than 24 hours.
  • Cover for COVID-related events - both plans offer cover for emergency medical assistance if you get sick with COVID-19 overseas. Under the Explorer plan you may be able to claim against cancellation, trip interruption expenses and some quarantine costs if you are diagnosed with COVID-19. For all the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions relating to our Covid cover, please read our Coronavirus cover article.
  • Renting a car - aside from the insurance a rental company will require you to have, it’s handy to have rental car excess as a policy inclusion. Our Explorer plan provides you up to the value of USD$2000 and comes into play if your hire car is damaged, stolen or involved in an accident during the rental period. This cover does not replace the need to take out rental car insurance or a damage waiver (CDW). If you’re planning to drive you must hold the correct licence, adhere to local laws, and have the necessary vehicle insurance.

What's not covered?

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything – so make sure you know what you’re covered for. Some, but not all, of the events we don’t cover include:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions as explained in your policy wording.
  • Traveling to, planning to travel to, or choosing to remain in a country or region that is the subject of a US Department of State or your local government’s ‘Do Not Travel’ or ‘Avoid Non-essential Travel’ warning.
  • Illness associated with a failure to comply with preventative measures for the travel region, as outlined by the World Health Organization.
  • Participation in a sport or activity not listed in the policy wording or where you haven’t paid the required additional premium.
  • Costs arising from refusal to be repatriated once declared medically unfit to continue a trip but fit for repatriation.

This is only a summary of coverage and does not include the full terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full so you understand what is and isn’t covered. That way there won’t be any surprises if you need to use it. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
