The 50 states of the US are a melting pot of culture, natural wonders, history, languages, small towns, and urban centers. Wilderness lovers can climb through the rocky gorges of Bryce Canyon National Park, search for wildlife in Yellowstone, and chase the wildest landscapes of Alaska. City lovers can catch a show on Broadway in New York City, walk through charming Charleston, South Carolina, and admire the architecture and views in San Francisco.

While you might feel more at ease traveling in your own country, the unexpected can still happen. We encourage you to consider travel insurance* for your travels within the United States, which help protect you against unexpected flight delays, lost luggage, missed connections, and so much more.

Do I need travel insurance for the USA?

Travel can bring all kinds of unexpected surprises - like coming across jazz musicians playing on the streets of New Orleans or watching a guzzling geyser in Grand Teton National Park.

Some surprises are not as great though. Nobody wants to think about things like canceled trips, delayed baggage, and medical emergencies, but these things can happen unexpectedly. If you twist your fall and get hurt while climbing Angel’s Landing in Zion, you may then wish that you had travel insurance for the USA.

World Nomads has four plans to choose from, and when you get a quote you can compare the options and choose the best international travel insurance for your needs.

Travel insurance for activities in the USA

From packrafting in Jackson Hole, Wyoming to shredding some fresh powder in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, outdoor enthusiasts have so many thrills to experience in their own backyard! World Nomads covers more than 250 activities for Americans traveling within the US.

Ocean lovers can surf the swells in Oahu and Santa Cruz, snorkel with manta rays in Hawai’i, and scuba dive in the Florida Keys. If mountains are more your thing, the US has phenomenal year-round hiking options. You can climb to the top of Mount Rainier in Washington state or conquer one of Colorado’s many high-altitude mountains. During winter, ski in Colorado’s Rockies or learn to dog sled in Alaska.

When you get a quote for your travel insurance for the USA, it’s advantageous to have a general itinerary in mind. Different plans cover different activities. An advance plan will help you choose the best insurance for your trip. For example, kayaking with orcas in the San Juan Islands is covered under all plans. However, if you want to take a scenic hot air balloon ride in New Mexico, you’ll need to invest in the Epic or the Explorer plan.

Travel insurance for medical emergencies in the USA

Accidents can happen anywhere in the world, even while you’re traveling in your home country. Your health insurance may not provide out-of-area or out-of-state coverage, so having travel insurance for the USA can help protect you from the unexpected during your adventures.

For example, if you fall and injure yourself while bouldering in Oregon’s Smith Rock State Park, your travel insurance for the USA may be beneficial. In the event of a medical emergency while traveling in the USA, you can call the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team and they can help refer you to a place that offers the level of care that you need.

To streamline your experience seeking medical treatment in the United States, we recommend signing up for FootprintID before your trip. This non-insurance service is a portable personal health record where your documents, prescriptions, test results, and emergency contacts are accessible in one place. Whether you need to refill a prescription or deal with a more serious injury, FootprintID expedites the process.

Travel insurance for lost bags in the USA

What happens if you land in Salt Lake City and find out your bags didn’t arrive at the same time you did? If you’re left sitting at the airport carousel anxiously waiting for the bag that never comes, your travel insurance for the USA may reimburse you for a change of clothes and toiletries until your bag makes its way to you (if the delay is 12 hours or more).

If you’re skiing in Park City and you packed your new ski jacket, you could be reimbursed for the cost of replacing it if the airline isn’t able to remedy the situation. The other belongings in your lost checked bag could be covered as well (up to plan limits, conditions and exclusions apply).

After contacting the airline, the next step is to contact Blue Ribbon Bags. This non-insurance service will track and expedite the return of your undelivered baggage by the airline. Make sure to have the file reference or record locator number and Property Irregularity Report on hand when you call Blue Ribbon Bags so you can file a lost luggage claim.

Travel insurance for canceled, interrupted, or delayed trips to the USA

Even if you have the perfect getaway planned, unexpected situations happen that can derail your plans. When looking for travel insurance plans for the USA, make sure to get one that covers trip cancelation, delays, and interruptions—and could reimburse you those non-refundable flights, hotels, and activities you paid for in advance.

If you purchase the Explorer and Epic Plan during the time sensitive period, the plans also may cover various travel inconveniences you may encounter on your adventures within the USA. For example, if you planned a ski vacation to Lake Tahoe, but the resort lacks snow and closes when you are already there, you may be eligible for compensation. Or if your rental car broke down on a road trip through the mountains of Utah and you arrived more than 12 hours late at your destination, you may also be eligible for compensation.

Tips for Americans traveling in the USA

If you purchase travel insurance for the USA, it’s a good idea to save the 24/7 Emergency Assistance phone number and your plan number in your cell phone so you don’t have to search for that if an emergency happens.

There are things to keep in mind even if you’re traveling in your own country. Each state does things a bit differently and has its own rules. Sales tax varies state-to-state and speed limits can change as well. Be mindful of the change of etiquette and regulations as you explore new frontiers of this diverse country.

Take time, slow down, and explore the unknown. Check out our round-up of the least-visited national parks in the US for some inspiration. And as you explore the great outdoors, be mindful of the wilderness and leave no trace principles. Travel insurance tip: some countries may require proof of COVID-19 vaccination before you can enter, and some have introduced visas and travel insurance minimum requirements. Do your research before you go as travel insurance does not cover expenses you incur because you don’t have the correct visas to enter your intended destination(s). Make sure you have the required proof of any vaccinations so you can easily produce them while traveling overseas.
