As you’re planning all the details of your next fabulous getaway, you may also be looking into getting a quote for travel insurance*. If you get hurt hiking in Costa Rica or have a canceled flight on the way to Japan, you may see the importance of travel insurance. When you start to do a travel insurance plan comparison though, you’ll see there’s multiple options. It can sometimes be confusing to determine what the best travel insurance is for your needs.

When deciding which travel insurance plan is best for you, it's also worth checking if the plan includes any additional non-insurance services. For US residents, all World Nomads plans offer coverage for things like trip cancellation, trip interruption, trip delay, and emergency medical services. However, all of our plans also offer even more perks above and beyond those traditional travel insurance benefits.

What extra benefits are included with World Nomads travel insurance?

In addition to all of the travel insurance benefits, World Nomads also offers multiple non-insurance services for US residents. These additional services are included in all World Nomads plans, and could offer even more protection for your trip.

These extra services may help with things like medical preparations for your trip and lost airline bags.

Every World Nomads plan includes:

  • Service from Blue Ribbon Bags that helps reunite you with checked baggage, if an airline has lost it
  • A pre-departure medical consultation from Runway Health
  • A portable personal health record provided by FootprintID®

Get help with lost bags

Unfortunately, lost bags are a pretty common occurrence when flying. If you’re the one left standing at the airport carousel waiting for the bag that went to Melbourne, Florida instead of Melbourne, Australia, it can be pretty frustrating. Do you really want to be sitting at an airport trying to track down your lost bags when you could be lying on the beach?

If your checked baggage is lost or delayed by an airline (any common carrier airline, anywhere in the world), our partnership with Blue Ribbon Bags helps find it and return it to you. Blue Ribbon Bags tracks and expedites your lost bags, allowing you to continue your travels as you had originally planned. Just report your lost bags to the airline, then provide Blue Ribbon Bags with the file reference, record locator number, and Property Irregularity Report. You'll receive updates at every step while you’re sipping that fruity drink on the beach.

Your travel insurance plan also includes coverage for delayed baggage. If your baggage is delayed for at least 12 hours, you could be reimbursed for toiletries and a change of clothes until you and your bags are reunited.

Consult with a doctor and get travel medications before you leave

While your travel insurance plan may cover emergency medical expenses while you’re traveling, there’s some things you can be proactive about to try to avoid certain illnesses altogether. You would probably rather be hiking the Inca Trail as opposed to sitting at a hospital dealing with altitude sickness, right?

It’s important to put thought into any health risks you may face in the destinations where you’ll be traveling. Luckily, your World Nomads plan includes an additional service that gives you pre-trip medical support through Runway Health.

You’ll need to register for Runway Health once you purchase your plan and then set up your online medical consultation with one of their US-licensed physicians. They’ll then build out a custom treatment plan that includes the prescriptions you’ll need. They can prescribe medications for things like preventing malaria, altitude sickness, motion sickness, and traveler’s diarrhea. They’ll even send your medications to your doorstep so you don’t have to make that extra trip to the pharmacy. They can also let you know what vaccines you may need for certain parts of the world, and they can prescribe those to you as well.

Take your medical records with you when you’re traveling

Another non-insurance service included with your World Nomads plan is access to FootprintID®. This is a secure solution that allows you to have immediate access to your medical records anywhere in the world.

If you’re overseas and end up in the hospital, you’ll want your medical team to have access to this critical information. It’s important for them to know about your prescriptions, allergies, medical conditions, immunizations, surgeries, physicians, and family history. Your FootprintID® could include all of these details, and they could have access to it 24/7. This is included with all World Nomads plans, but you’ll need to register for FootprintID once you’ve purchased your plan. Taking the time to set this up could save your life if you unexpectedly have a medical emergency while you’re traveling.

The additional benefits of travel insurance

We encourage you to check out the extra perks included in your plan from World Nomads. The non-insurance services are designed to add additional medical support before your trip and help with one of the most common annoyances of traveling - lost bags. When you get a quote, you’ll see these non-insurance services included in all of the World Nomads plans. If you have questions about them, you can reach out to us anytime, and our team can help explain these benefits.

Baggage Delay in a Delhi Winter.

I arrived in Delhi from Rome. Baggage claim help desk informed me that my bag had been delayed in transit. I was without my bag for almost a week before it was finally delivered to me. It was cold in Delhi (being winter, December) and my warm jacket was in my bag, requiring that I purchase a jacket and other items of warm clothing that I had not taken in my carry-on.
