Tropical Storm Milton rapidly intensified into a hurricane over the Atlantic Ocean on October 6, 2024. According to the National Hurricane Center, Milton has strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts. The storm is currently located about 150 miles west of Progreso, Mexico, and approximately 735 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida. Milton is moving east-southeast at a speed of 8 mph. An eastward to east-southeastward motion is expected through tonight, followed by a turn toward the east and northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday. Based on the forecast track, Milton is projected to move near or just north of the Yucatán Peninsula today and Tuesday, then cross the eastern Gulf of Mexico and approach the west coast of the Florida Peninsula by Wednesday. The hurricane is forecasted to intensify into an extremely dangerous storm later today and is expected to maintain that intensity over the next couple of days.
