Physical or sexual assault isn’t something you want to think about on your trip, but the unfortunate truth is that these attacks can happen to travelers. If you are the victim of a crime, we are here to help you.

While some destinations have higher incidents than others, no destination is immune. To add complexity to already horrific circumstances, the laws and customs of countries can vary greatly. It’s critical to know what to do after an attack and who to call to get immediate help.

Does World Nomads travel insurance cover assault?

If you’ve been assaulted overseas, our Single trip and annual travel insurance plans for US residents have benefits that may cover medical expenses that are needed to get you on the road to recovery. The medical benefits under your plan may help to reimburse things like:

  • Hospitalization
  • Day surgery and out-patient treatment
  • Visits to registered medical practitioners
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Ambulances
  • Extra expenses to get you home, if medically necessary as determined by your attending physician and with the approval of the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team.

If you’re injured or hospitalized as a result of an assault, you, your travel companion, a close friend or relative should contact the 24/7 Emergency Assistance Team as soon as possible. Our Emergency Assistance Teams have experience understanding and liaising with medical providers on the ground, so that you can get the care you need, when you need it.

If you have been the victim of a sexual assault, be sure to seek medical attention as soon as possible. You may want to consider emergency contraception, antiretrovirals and emergency blood tests.

If you are in a country where you think you could be in danger if you report the assault to the police, contact our Emergency Assistance team for advice. They will be able to help you navigate these difficult times.

Can I cancel my trip if I’ve been assaulted?

World Nomads offers trip cancellation and trip delay coverage for US residents in the event you or your traveling companion are the victim of a felonious assault prior to leaving for your trip.

Remember, you must purchase your plan before an event happens that would cause you to cancel your trip.

Be sure to get both police and doctor or hospital reports before you make a claim, and reach out to our customer service team if you have any questions.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

Travel insurance is designed for when things unexpectedly happen to you. If you pick a fight and end up coming out worse for wear, we're going to take that into account and may decide you won't be covered because you may have committed a criminal act. All plans have limitations, conditions and exclusions, which are explained in the plan’s wording.

Tips to avoid assault while traveling

There are many steps you can take to increase your chances of avoiding assault.

  • Travel with a buddy.
  • Take extra precautions when traveling at night.
  • Share your plans with a friend or loved one, especially if going to an unfamiliar area.
  • Heed local advice about safe and unsafe neighborhoods.
  • Never leave food or drink unattended. If you fear your food or drink may have been spiked, immediately call emergency services, or tell someone who can help, including a friend, bartender or bouncer.
  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, extract yourself from the situation as quickly and politely as possible.

The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network also provides safety tips for travelers. Assaulted in Paris.

On the first night of my trip to Paris, I was waiting at a bus stop to get to the place where I was staying when I was pulled into a car and sexually assaulted. After a struggle, I was able to get out of the car and run to the nearest area with foot-traffic. I immediately went to the nearest hospital emergency room at Hopital Hotel-Dieu where emergency blood tests were done to determine possible transmission of sexually transmitted disease, as well as given Hepatitis B shot, a NorLevo pill to prevent pregnancy, and an emergency prescription of antiretroviral medication for the exposure to HIV/AIDS.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about overseas medical insurance. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team.

  • Do I call the police if I've been assaulted?
Local laws may require you to contact the local authorities before calling other assistance. However, you should contact our emergency team as well, so they can assess the situation and help guide you.
  • What happens if I'm injured and need life support?
That’s a really bad way to end your holiday, and we hope you never end on life support. But if you do, we will look at the best possible solution to either get you home, or get your family over there to say goodbye.
  • Can my mom come and get me?
If you need a medical escort, we will send you home with a nurse or doctor. Family members aren't usually allowed to be medical escorts, but it depends on your situation.
